Training and Outreach

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state regulatory agencies encourage training for stormwater dischargers to fully understand National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance.  The NPDES permitting program offers training courses, workshops, and webinars to explain the regulatory framework and technical considerations of the NPDES permit program. These courses are designed for permit writers, dischargers, EPA officials, and other interested parties. Check out the NPDES training courses on the EPA website.

This WebResource offers training courses (classroom and web-based) that specifically address airport stormwater compliance:

    • Course 3: Stormwater Plans, Inspections, and Reporting defines three types of stormwater plans common to airports including a Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan; a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan; and a Stormwater Management Plan.
    • Course 4: Managing Deicing Runoff covers the environmental impacts of deicers, the challenges in managing them, and best practices for deicing management.
    • Course 5: Sampling & Monitoring covers the necessary steps and background data for the implementation and planning of a stormwater sampling and monitoring program.

Some state regulatory authorities also provide stormwater guidance for airports. A few examples are provided below:
