Step 5: Assess Your Current Social Media Integration
Self-Assessment Tool
As a discipline, airport emergency management (EM) continues to grow and become more professional and sophisticated. Social media (SM) programs at airports have also developed beyond simple marketing into savvy communication and public relations operations. However, not all airports have properly integrated the two programs. To effectively assess SMEM at your airport, it is important to understand why integration between SM and EM is necessary and why it is difficult for an airport operator to be successful if there are two strong, yet independent, programs.
The Self-Assessment Tool leads you through a series of questions that will help you assess your current level of SM and EM maturity, the current integration of the two programs, and the SM tools you use. The results also highlight sections in this WebResource that cover your areas for improvement, providing you the necessary insight to start planning your next steps.
Who Should Complete the Assessments?
- Assess EM Program: completed by the EM manager and shared with the SM manager to discuss whether current plans and program elements can support integrating SM.
- Assess SM: completed by the SM manager and shared with the EM manager to discuss any areas of improvement that may be needed prior to building an SMEM program.
- Assess SMEM Current Integration: designed for those looking to improve an existing program. The assessment should be completed by the SM and EM managers together to assess the current level of SMEM integration and to identify areas for improvement. Those without SMEM integration may also take the assessment to establish a benchmark for future assessments.
- Assess SM Tools: completed by the SM manager and can include information technology staff. The assessment may be done before or after you have determined the level of integration (see Step 8) you are seeking to achieve.
Click any of the following to assess your capabilities:
Assess EM Program
(Depth and Maturity)
Assess SM
(Sophistication and Maturity)
Assess SM Tools
(Current and Future Use)
Note: When you complete the assessment, print or “save to file” the results for your reference and use as a comparison when you re-assess in the future. ACRP does not store WebResource user information or track user history, so any assessment information that is not printed or saved will be lost.
Once you complete the self-assessment, we suggest you go to the SM Tools tab to gain a better understanding of what effective tools provide. The SM Tools tab also provides additional details and discussion on how to select tools for your airport size (and budget), and it provides ways to implement these tools. We suggest you refer to these resources often as you move through the steps to better integration.
