Roadmap_Part 01

Step 1: Understand the Basic Functions of Social Media

SUMMARY

Building or improving a program for integrating social media with emergency management (SMEM) requires a solid understanding of the basics of social media (SM) use and management. Even if the champions of the program development have this understanding, this will most likely be insufficient to build and sustain the program; a successful SMEM program takes partnership and collaboration from all areas of your community. This includes interacting with more tech-savvy individuals who are familiar with SM and with individuals who may be resistant to embracing SM.

Through this first step, we provide you with a foundational understanding of SM functions and uses in the airport environment. If you are well versed in the end user functions of SM, be sure to at least review the SM management functions section; you will need to be familiar with the terms as you progress through the WebResource. Whether you are an airport executive, SMEM program champion, or program participant, having a shared understanding will set your team on the path toward successful collaboration.

Please note that we designed this WebResource with the assumption that you have, or are part of, existing SM and emergency management (EM) programs. If this is not the case, see the supplemental reading list under the Resources tab for further information on these topics before you proceed.
