What is a Logic Model?
Logic models are widely used in program planning and assessment since they illustrate the logical flow of a program from inputs, activities, outputs, intermediate outcomes, and impact or long-term outcomes. As such, they permit the assessment of progress at various points in a program, not simply the long-term impact, which may not occur until months or years after program implementation. The key components of a logic model are inputs, activities, outputs, short-term outcomes, and impacts or long-term outcomes.
Logic Model Example
FRS is a small independently owned local delivery service specializing in quick turnaround small parcel deliveries. FRS operates a fleet of twenty-five vehicles. Recently several drivers have received tickets for speeding and a couple have been in minor crashes involving speed. The owner is worried about her employees’ safety, the public’s safety, and her company’s liability. She has asked her HR Director to develop and implement a traffic safety program to address speed related crashes. The HR Director has developed the following logic model as a systematic and visual way to communicate his understanding of the relationships between the resources needed, the necessary activities, and the changes the program hopes to achieve.
FRS Logic Model to Address Speeding-Related Crashes:
Inputs
Staff trainers Employees who need training Training guides and materials Training space Human resources data on crashes Employee release timeActivities
Train the trainers Develop training materials & packets Deliver training sessions Collect/assemble data Analyze before & after metrics Assess satisfaction with training Share metric results with employeesOutputs
Number of training sessions held Number of drivers trained Number of passing safety quiz scores Number of metrics tracked over time Number of employees updated on metrics Number of positive employee feedback reportsOutcomes (shorter term)
Decreased speeding Increased situational awareness regarding speed Increased maintainenance of safe distance from other vehicles Decreased hard braking Increased employee awareness of company safety trends Increased employee buy-in & engagementImpacts (longer term outcomes)
Reduced crashes Reduced insurance rates Improved organization reputation Improved employee morale Improved employee complianceResources
