ACRP Report 30: Reference Guide on Understanding Common Use at Airports

Abstract

The implications of airports transitioning from a traditional model (of airline facility use and leasing focused on dedicated facilities) to common use (wherein airlines share facilities such as ticket counters, self-service kiosks, and gates in the airport terminal) has elicited varying and, often, conflicting perceptions of benefit and cost. This reference guide will help airport and airline professionals to make informed decisions about implementing common use of facilities at airports.

A virtual tour of the guide was developed as part of the project to enable stakeholders to view information relevant to their areas of expertise and interest (Virtual_Airport.exe). Spreadsheet models to estimate cost recovery impact for a common use gate (Gate_Fee_Per_Turn_Break_Even_Analysis.xls), and to identify upgrade costs for implementing common use ticket counters (Ticket_Counter_Fees.xls) are included. The report will be useful to airports and airlines, from those responsible for operations, information technology, business management, to the CEO.
