Strategy & Policy: Developing Strategies & Policies that Prioritize Innovation

Since an organization’s strategy and policy set the overall tone for employees to follow, innovation needs to be a priority in these elements for it to become one of the culture's values. For strategy and policy to be effective at being innovative, they need to integrate organizational functions, align goals to a common mission, and ensure that all departments are accountable for their decisions.

Leaders use strategic plans to set unifying goals for everyone to meet. By adding innovative values like experimenting, creativity, diversity and collaboration to an organization’s strategic plan, leaders can start molding the environment to support behaviors that reflect innovation, help an airport successfully meet organizational goals, and exceed customer expectations through continuous improvement.

Innovative staff members seek the clarity provided in their organization’s strategic plan. They are always looking for more efficient ways of doing things, which helps them create change. Innovative staff members are comfortable with change and understand that change is a constant in their workplace.
