Individual Level

At the individual level, interventions that aim to mitigate risk-taking behaviors can include print/online educational materials and online self-paced training modules. Risk-taking behaviors of moped/scooter riders include speeding, riding under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, riding without a helmet, riding with improper safety gear, riding without proper training and skills, failing to yield right-of-way, etc. To improve the efficacy of interventions at the individual level, efforts must address known risk factors and crash characteristics. For example, helmet use should receive greater emphasis than speeding in moped/scooter rider education because, when compared to other motorcyclists, moped/scooter riders are significantly less likely to be wearing a helmet at the time of a crash, while moped/scooter crashes are more likely to occur in lower speed zones.
