    Why Moped/Scooter Safety?

BTSCRP WebResource 2

While motorcycles and motor vehicles have been extensively studied for safety purposes, and many laws have been established to ensure best practices for vehicle operators and pedestrians, lower-powered vehicles like mopeds and scooters have become more popular over recent years. As such, laws and mandates for how to be safe on the roads while operating these vehicles are important, and that is why we created this resource.

This WebResource was developed to provide moped/scooter safety information and resources for government agencies, private sector organizations, and the general public. All intervention tools are empirically based and were designed in the context of the social-ecological model (SEM), which emphasizes the importance of multilevel strategies (individual, interpersonal, community, and policy) to promote behavior change. The resources that are provided include a comprehensive safety plan and a selection of evidence-based mitigation tools, including ready-to-use graphics, videos, social media posts, which are categorized by level of SEM and include guidelines for implementation and customization based on user needs.

BTSCRP WebResource 2: Mitigation Tools for Improving Rider Safety on Mopeds and Seated Motor Scooters is published together with BTSCRP Research Report 11: Improving Rider Safety for Mopeds and Seated Motor Scooters of 50cc or Less, which can be read or downloaded on the National Academies Press website.
