Safety culture

« Back to Glossary Index

Shared employee values, beliefs, and assumptions about safety in an organization that are largely subconscious (based on definitions of organizational culture from Pettigrew, 1979; Schein, 1992). Guldenmund (2000) defined safety culture as “those aspects of the organizational culture which will impact on attitudes and behaviour related to increasing or decreasing risk” (p. 251). The term safety culture is used much more frequently than safety climate in research and practice; however, survey measures administered tend to align more closely with the definition of safety climate than safety culture.
