Emergency Response

Accidents involving airfield series circuit lighting are often serious and life threatening. Every second may count when dealing with injuries, so it is extremely important that an emergency plan is in place and reviewed on a regular basis. Anyone who works on airfield lighting should be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillator (AED) and first aid. Emergency phone numbers and radio frequencies for medical help should be posted in maintenance vehicles and lighting facilities, and a portable AED should be located in the maintenance vehicle used by electricians.

In developing resources for airfield electrical safety, the research team noted that many airport emergency responders are often unprepared for dealing with airfield electrical equipment in a safe manner given their unique hazards. The research team suggests further research into the engagement of emergency response personnel in airfield electrical safety to ensure safe interactions with electrical equipment during all phases of the emergency response process.
