Airport Case Study: Newark Liberty International Airport

Key Highlights

  • Goal is to be fully common use, facility-wide.
  • New terminal is being built with a purposeful focus on common use, including the hub airline (United).
  • The first multi-airline, self-bag drop with a common ground handler in the United States.
  • Airport operated by Munich Systems.
  • Self-bag drop designed into the building.
  • One terminal is 2/3 common use while another is leased by United.
  • Airlines want more common use systems and services, such as Citizens Broadband Radio Service, ground handling, and other systems and services.
  • Looking for a cloud environment to future-proof systems.
  • Would like a common use pool of ground service equipment but it would need to be electric and trackable.
  • Working with international airlines on ADA requirements for kiosks.

Newark Liberty International Airport is quickly growing and maturing in common use at the facility. They are slowly expanding the new terminal while phasing out the old facilities. This is allowing them to slowly transition into an airport with more focus on common use. They are also in the process of a major self-bag drop installation in a new terminal that will have common agents and two “pods” with dynamic signage and SITA bag drop systems. The long-term plan is for common use to enable integration across all terminals and to be a testbed for all port airports.

The airlines in Newark are helping to push the expansion of common use but are also interested in keeping some balance in what is made common use and what is kept proprietary. The airport also operates an airport operational database (AODB) and dynamic signage.

Focus Systems and Services

  • Self-bag-drop
  • AODB
  • Dynamic signage
  • License plate recognition
  • Beacons for tracking
  • Blown fiber throughout new terminal (increased flexibility)
  • Walker Ducts in the bag drop/checkpoint areas for additional flexibility
